Three Wishes to make Bristol Happy

Staff's picture

By Annabel Reddick & Mike Zeidler

Ask anyone what they would like most for their children and most will say they want them to be healthy and happy. Bristol’s first mayoral election gives us a unique platform to ask candidates to build happiness into their plans, and Bristol Manifesto’s Three Wishes campaign is an opportunity to do just that.

Showcase your inspiration at the harbourfest

If you'd like to bring an activity to the Happy City Zone of the Harbour Festival (21-22 July 2012) and be part of this incredible crowd sourced event, here's what you need to know.

T Minus 17. The Countdown continues...

We’re a long way from organised, but we’ve got enough great activities shaping up now to feel pretty confident the Amphitheatre will be good and busy!

Increase Happiness with us on Nov 1st...

Staff's picture
We're starting November with a Happy gathering on Monday 1st November from 6-8pm at Hamilton House (aka The Canteen), 80 Stokes Croft for those of you who'd like to get more informed and involved in Happy City.

Happiness

Happiness is a big idea.  People have been writing about it for as long as people have been writing, so there's a LOT been said about what it is, where to find it and so on.  Here's our rather simple take on the matter, and if you're interested in hearing what other people think, there are references and book reviews below... We think there are broadly two types of happiness - short wave (that's the 'cream bun' type) and long wave (that's the 'deep contentment' type).  This project is about long wave happiness, the stuff that really matters in our lives and makes it all seem worthwhile.

What's Up

Here's where facebookers and other Happy City fans can get more detail about the things we're either planning, doing, been invited to, wish we'd been invited to, or generally approve of because they increase happiness in some way. As one of the core principles of Happy City is to highlight what's already here that works well, we'll be putting links to good 'What's On' sites as and when we find them - tell us your favourite listings and we'll add them too... We need volunteers to help keep this up to date - apologies it's so sparse for now.... Happy City events

Be Involved

The Happy City Initiative is currently run by a small team including Liz & Mike Zeidler, Majid Younis, Maddy Longhurst, Dave Forman, Stephen Clarke, Ray Morrow, Trenna Cormack, Kyle Hannon and Kate Smith, but it's designed to be run by LOTS of us.  Right now (Feb 2011)  we've got the active support and endorsement of around 50 others, over 400 people on our newsletter list, 239 'Likes' on Facebook, and 745 Twitter followers.

PLEDGES

Staff's picture
This will be an active space where people can encourage others to join them in getting things done. We'll be basing this section on the existing Pledgebank site, and here are some examples of Bristol based pledges already made there: I, Fiona, will Organise a Love Music Hate Racism Event in Bristol but only if 4 other people will help out. I, Eric Booth, will give £25 to Windmill HIll City Farm for their Save Our Farm Appeal, and I will complete a gift aid form but only if 500 other people will do the same.

GET INVOLVED

Advertised as 'Hit The Spot' in our newsletters, these are opportunities to get a chunk of the Happiness Action.   The new site will highlight opportunities all over the city with links to places like Volunteering Bristol. If you can gather a group together, we'll happily come and visit you for an hour or so to talk about happiness and the initiative, or we can arrange a learning session to help you explore ways of increasing happiness where you live.  We're also keen to build our group of volunteers to help out in a range of ways...details are on the other page of this Blog
